Fiona Apple’s most recent release, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, is an experimental rock album that is a refreshingly unique sound in today’s music industry. In the song Heavy Balloon, Apple’s gritty, strong vocals in the chorus make the track memorable, along with the slow drum beat and instrumental keeping the track going. The funky piano intro of Shameika sets up nicely for the story Apple tells throughout the song. The instrumentals throughout the song connect well with the vocals, seeming like the bounce off each other especially in the chorus. The song Cosmonauts has one of the catchiest choruses and becomes increasingly intense as the song goes on with the repeated “started-off” in the post-choruses. The acapella beginning and the layered vocals that continued throughout the song For Her makes it one of the most unique, and enjoyable listens, we’ve had off an album from this year so far.
The album has a lot to offer from the music to Apple’s vocals to some interesting stories in the lyrics. While it might seem a bit out there to some listeners, it’s a great album and we highly recommend it.
